Mission statement of the organisation

The main mission of EAD is to protect the interest of the Deaf and Deaf unions; to be the link between Deaf and Governmental institutions.

History of the NAD

1886: Vändra Deaf School established by Ernst Sokolovski. This school was open from 1886-1924.

1922: Estonian Association of Deaf founded by Kaarel Luht

1924: Porkuni Deaf School established

1941: Tartu Hiie School established

1981: Association of Estonian Sign Language Interpreters established

1994: Tallinna Heleni School established

1998: Start of interpreted news on national TV

2005: National standard for Sign Language interpreters introduced

2006: National professional register of Sign Language interpreters.

2006: Estonian Deaf Youth Organisation established

2006: Start of Sign Language interpreter course at Tartu University

2007: Legal recognition of Estonian Sign Language as an Estonian national language
