Is there any campaign to get the sign language legally recognised? Yes, French Sign Language was recognised in a law of 11 February 2005, but does not form part of the Constitution.

Deaf Schools

Number of Deaf Schools and teaching methods: 15 schools using French Sign Language only and 5 school using a bilingual approach, and several schools using other methods (oral, LPC...)


History of the NAD

After the ban on sign language in 1880 the Deaf created a federation. The first reunion was founded in 1893, the federation has since changed several times (title, statutes etc). At the moment, it is called 'National Federation of the Deaf' and has been established since 1966.
