Mission statement of the organisation ENS represents and defends the moral, civil, cultural and economic rights of Italian deaf people ascribed to them by law, acting also through its designated legal representatives on the basis of Italian laws. The main aim of ENS, which is not-for-profit organisation for the exclusive pursuit of social solidarity - is the social inclusion of deaf people, promoting their unity. The ENS protects, represents, promotes and improves the dignity and the autonomy of deaf people, as well as their full civil rights in all fields of life, such as self-determination, accessibility and information, formation and integration in the educational, professional, working and social fields, the full realization of job rights for the deaf, favouring employment and professional activity in individual and cooperative forms, sign language, total and bilingual communication, rehabilitation, culture, sports, leisure and recreational activities. The ENS abjures aggressive nursing and any kind of discrimination aimed at limiting or hurting individual freedom and dignity.

Status of Sign Language Is Sign Language legally recognised as part of your Government's constitution? No Is there any campaign to get the sign language legally recognised? There are several campaigns and draft bills asking for official Italian Sign Language (LIS) recognition. Last bill proposed about deaf social inclusion - which also included the recognition of Italian Sign Language - was pre-approved by the Council of Ministers, but suspended due to the Italian Government crisis.
