History of the NAD We just celebrated our 90th anniversary. Our organisation was founded in the "Rødbygget" in Trondheim in 1849. The building was erected to house the first deaf school of Norway (from 1825). There were six founders, three hearing and three Deaf. The first Deaf clubs were founded in 1879. At the time of the founding the organisation had three main goals: education, social well-being and Christian service.

Andreas Christian Møller (1796-1874): Deaf, founder of the first Deaf School (Trondheim) Erik Strangestad (1837-1893): Deaf, Deaf teacher and important person for the founding of the first Deaf club in Oslo in 1879. Lars Havstad (1851-1913): Deaf, first Deaf student and worked as a journalist and an advisor for the Prime Minister, important person for the founding of the first Deaf club in Oslo in 1879. Conrad Svendsen (1862-1941): Hearing, world's first priest for the Deaf. Sign Language user. Johannes Berge (1870-1959): Hearing, first president of the Norwegian Association of the Deaf.
