Mission statement of the organisation

The Association's mission is to associate, integrate and rehabilitate Deaf and hearing impaired people to jointly solve problems and act for equal developmental, educational, occupational and social opportunities.

Status of Sign Language

Is Sign Language legally recognised as part of your Government's constitution? No

Is there any campaign to get Sign Language legally recognised? Yes, The Polish Association of the Deaf is participating in a campaign to get the Polish government to adopt a regulation which will force all public TV stations to broadcast all their programmes with subtitles from 2010 on.

Universities/Sign Language Units

Are there any Universities that deals with Sign Language? (Deaf Studies, Linguistics, Interpreting) Yes, Sign Language and Linguistics Studies for postgraduates has been available at the University of Warsaw since October 2008.

Sign language courses are available for students at several universities: University of Warsaw, Catholic University of Lublin, Warsaw Medical University, Warmia and Mazuria University of Olsztyn, University of Warsaw, Maria Grzegorzewska Academy of Special Education

History of the NAD

The Association was established in 1946 after the Polish Union of Associations of the Deaf-Mute, which was set up in 1925 as a result of the Deaf social movement that had existed in the Polish territories since 1876. It was active until the outbreak of World War II. The Association is a direct continuation of the tradition, and the ideological and rehabilitation ideals of the Deaf movement.
