A cooperation meeting between the European Union of the Deaf (EUD) and the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) took place in Helsinki, Finland

On the 5th of February 2018, a cooperation meeting between the European Union of the Deaf (EUD) and the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) took place in Helsinki, Finland. Markku Jokinen and Mark Wheatley represented EUD while Colin Allen, Eeva Tupi and Nafisah Rantasalmi represented WFD.

The parties took the opportunity to review and evaluate the past cooperation and were pleased to see many positive collaborations. They decided that the cooperation agreement needs to be updated adding some additional cooperation work and also reflecting the current political climate.

There was an important achievement within the sign language community on the 19th of December 2017: The UN has adopted the International Sign Language Day, which will be celebrated on the 23rd of September annually, starting from this year. The goal of the UN Observances, such as International Days, is to promote awareness and action on these issues on an international level. Both parties took the opportunity to consider their strategy for the Sign Language Day.

We would like to thank the Finnish Association of the Deaf for their hospitality throughout the day.
