EUD Webinar

13th December 2022
10:00h – 12:00h Brussels time

The 20 principles of the European Pillar of Social Rights (the Pillar) are the beacon guiding us towards a strong social Europe that is fair, inclusive and full of opportunity. With the European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan, the European Commission has set out concrete initiatives to deliver on the European Pillar of Social Rights. The delivery on the Pillar is a joint effort by EU institutions, national, regional and local authorities, social partners and civil society.

One of the principles in the first chapter of the Pillar is Gender Equality. The Pillar specifies that equality of treatment and opportunities between women and men must be ensured and fostered in all areas, including regarding participation in the labour market, terms and conditions of employment and career progression and that women and men have the right to equal pay for work of equal value.

In the European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan, the European Commission highlights that efforts are particularly urgent to address gender-based stereotypes and discrimination. Despite progress in the last decade, the employment rate and pay levels of women still lag behind those of men. Women continue to be seriously underrepresented in decision-making positions, especially in senior management functions and in corporate boardrooms. EUD also highlights that employment rate and pay levels as well as the representation of women with disabilities are lowered compared to women without disabilities.

When implementing the principle of the Pillar on Gender Equality through the EU Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 and the legislative measures, for instance the EU Pay Transparency Directive and the EU Directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence, the EU continues to combat gender-based violence, counter gender stereotypes, to promote women’s participation in decision-making and work to close gender gaps in the labour market, pay and pensions. As EUD is determined to keep advancing gender equality and tackling multiple and intersecting discrimination for deaf women, this webinar aims to inform deaf women about the efforts at the EU level to combat gender inequality and consult the advocates for deaf women rights on how rights of deaf women should be better mainstreamed in EU level legislation and initiatives.
