World AIDS Day

EUD

World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate people who have died due to the infection. This day is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of the HI Virus. Government and health officials observe the day, often with speeches or forums on the AIDS topics.

World AIDS Day was the first global health day and the first one was held in 1988.

World AIDS Day was first conceived in August 1987 by two public information officers for the Global Programme on AIDS at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland. The director of the Global Programme on AIDS (now: the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS /UNAIDS) liked this concept, approved it, and agreed with the recommendation that the first observance of World AIDS Day should be 1 December 1988.

AIDS has killed more than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007, and an estimated 33.2 million people worldwide live with HIV as of 2007, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. Despite recent, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated 2 million lives in 2007, of which about 270,000 were children.

Between 2011-2015, World AIDS Day will have the theme of “Getting to zero: zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS related deaths”. The World AIDS Campaign focus on “Zero AIDS related deaths” signifies a push towards greater access to treatment for all; a call for governments to act now.

EUD is informing you about this worldwide problem. HIV infection and AIDS are a problem, which concerns Deaf persons too. There are a number of Deaf persons, who are infected, but they can nonetheless have a normal life. EUD wants to provide accessible information regarding this day and inform Deaf people about the risks involved. More information can be found on the links below.
