2019 Work Forum on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the EU and its Member States

On the 13^th of May EUD participated at the Work Forum on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) in the EU and its Member States. The Forum was organised by the European Commission and takes place every year since 2010.

The Forum gathered together representatives from Member States, European Union, civil society, focal points and all other stakeholders who are responsible for monitoring the implementation of the UN CRPD on both, national and EU levels. During the Forum participants shared experiences on the practical implementation and monitoring of the UN CRPD and searched for solutions to address common challenges. It addresses substantive rights as well as governance matters.

This year the Work Forum focused on the right to political participation during the EU Elections 2019 and how to ensure that people with disabilities can meaningfully exercise their right to vote. During the Forum participants also discussed how to claim the rights under the UN CRPD, e.g. how to enforce the right to inclusive education, what is the role of equality bodies, the European Ombudsman or the special rapporteur and the UNCRPD Committee in complaint procedures. Participants also discussed what is an interplay between the UNCRPD and the other international Conventions, such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) or The Hague Convention on the Protection of Vulnerable Adults.

The Work Forum on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities took in Brussels and was an excellent event to network with the representatives from the Member States and EU officials and discuss how the UN CRPD can be effectively implemented in the Member States and make a meaningful change for the deaf communities across the EU.
