Launch of new EUD Gender Equality working group

Launch of new EUD Gender Equality working group

In January 2017, a workshop on women’s rights took place in Ål, Norway. 14 deaf women from different national associations of the deaf as well as the EUD board participated in this workshop, whose goal was to discuss how to better include the fight for deaf women’s rights and gender equality into the European political agenda. Presentations covered past and ongoing work in Spain in this regard as well as the general situation of deaf women in Europe and the world.

EUD fully supports the ideas discussed during the workshop. EUD has decided to merge two of its working groups  – ICT and accessibility – into one and to launch a new working group on gender equality in order to make gender equality issues from a deaf perspective more visible in our work.

We are happy to officially announce and celebrate this new working group today. It will start its work on the 8th of March to coincide with the International women’s day. The group’s work will focus on the UN CRPD and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in addition to using these Conventions to examine past and future European legislation from a female and a deaf perspective.

In order to link up to the work of the new working group and to give it emphasis, we will also organise a workshop on deaf women’s rights during this year’s EUD General Assembly, as we believe that this will provide us with valuable input on how to include aspects related to gender equality more strongly into EUD’s work, including through the next board’s term.
