EESC Public Hearing on the UN CRPD

Yesterday, the European Economic and Social Committee hosted the public hearing on implementation and monitoring of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) in Brussels. EUD and EUDY both had representatives attend this hearing.

This public hearing sought to seek clarification on how the UN CRPD can be implemented at a European level while acknowledging that there is a grey area between competency’s of EU and Member States. Furthermore as outlined in Article 33 of the UN CRPD, contributions requested that the representatives proposed for the EU coordinating and monitoring mechanism be truly independent of the EU institutions. Interesting interventions came from the panel that covered people with disabilities, European Commission and independent experts.
