Board Meeting in Brussels/Ghent, Belgium

Board Meeting in Brussels/Ghent, Belgium

EUD holds its quarterly Board meetings in different locations across the EU to liaise with its members and to increase co-operation in all EUD member countries.

It was our first board meeting after the EUD Board’s election in Valletta, Malta on the 20th May 2017.

The first board meeting took place in EUD’s office in Brussels for two days. The EUD Board discussed important issues such as the updates on the European Accessibility Act, the UNCRPD publication on Article 24: Education and its general comment were a few amongst many of the topics involving our 4-year programme proposal prior to the European Commission’s approval.

The Board meetings play an important role in the European-wide co-operation of Deaf communities and these meetings, along with the General Assembly, are the cornerstones of EUD’s democratic structure.

We also took the opportunity to attend one National Association of the Deaf, the Flemish Deaf Association (Fevlado). They warmly welcomed the EUD Board and staff on Saturday the 2nd of September.

The President of Fevlado took the opportunity to introduce his staff and to engage in a discussion with the EUD board members regarding Fevlado’s policy work and its upcoming strategy.

Fevlado and EUD have agreed that every effort in improving access for Deaf sign language users in the country, especially in higher education and regarding interpreter services is essential and a priority.

The EUD Board members gave a seminar to introduce EUD’s work to the Flemish Deaf community. The turnout was approximately 50 people. EUD’s interactive presentation explained EUD’s structure, its members, as well as its vision to achieve equality in public and private life for Deaf sign language users. There was a debate after the presentation which all Board Members gave specific examples from their home countries about education and employment. The Flemish Deaf community were given many opportunities to engage in the debate.

We would like to express our appreciation and thanks for the hospitality from Fevlado.
