EUD encourages National Associations of the Deaf to advocate for the nomination of deaf candidates for the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities elections

EUD encourages National Associations of the Deaf to advocate for the nomination of deaf candidates for the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities elections

In February, the UN will launch the call for nominees to the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, with 10 April 2020 as the deadline. All countries that ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities can nominate a candidate. The election will take place in New York on 9-12 June 2020. EUD encourages you to nominate deaf experts, especially deaf female experts for the UN CRPD Committee from Europe.

Currently, only three members of the Committee are from Europe (Lithuania, Hungary and Switzerland). Most importantly, two of the Committee members who are deaf or hard of hearing, Mr. Lászlo Gábor Lovaszy from Hungary and Dmitry Rebrov from Russia Federation, are finishing their mandate in 2020. The committee members that served 2 terms cannot run for the election again and therefore cannot be re-elected. This is the case of Mr Laszlo Lovaszy Ph.D. and Dimitry Robrov

Furthermore, there is no women with disabilities from Europe nor deaf women in the Committee. As the election approaches it is very important for you to contact your government, and permanent mission to the UN in Geneva, to request them to nominate qualified deaf candidates, including deaf women for the election of the UN CRPD Committee.

Please contact EUD policy Officer Martyna Balciunaite [email protected] on this issue.
