European Accessibility Act: EDF Calls On The European Commission To Deliver
A Legislative Proposal On The Accessibility Of Goods And Services

EUD would like to congratulate EDF, the European Disability Forum, on its successful meeting with the Vice-President of the European Commission, Viviane Reding. EUD is a full member of EDF and fully supports EDF’s efforts to push forward a European Accessibility Act that benefits all disabled Europeans, including Deaf citizens.

EUD has been involved in the European Accessibility Act from the beginning, answering public consultations and taking part in the impact assessment carried out on behalf of the European Commission.

EUD is pleased to learn that the European Commission expressed its continued commitment to the Act and welcomes the inclusion of stakeholders in the economic sphere but is concerned that the Act that has been postponed several times will not be realised soon enough to achieve the equality proclaimed in the UNCRPD and the current European Disability Strategy. EUD therefore calls on the European Commission to continue including representative organisations and further integrate the UNCRPD in all its work, including legislative proposals.

Background European Accessibility Act:
The European Accessibility Act (EAA) forms part of the European Union’s effort to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) in line with its European Disability Strategy 2010-2020. It aims at removing barriers for disabled people to ensure full economic, social, and political participation in society. Through the harmonisation of accessibility requirements throughout the EU, the functioning of the Internal Market will be improved, and ultimately, Deaf and disabled people will have it easier to exercise their citizenship rights within the Union.
