Forum on the Rights of the Child

From the 29th to the 3rd of October, EUD attended the Forum on the Rights of the Child organised by the European Commission.

During the Forum distinguished speakers highlighted that putting children right at the centre of the debates, democracy and decision-making is fundamental. Children should be part of the democratic process, even if they’re not yet of voting age. However, not all children are aware of their rights and how to participate, but it’s very important to involve children with different backgrounds and life experiences when delivering policies that will affect them.

There was a particular focus on the wide range of policy areas in which children’s rights play a pivotal role, including migration, healthcare, education, public transport, social policy, technology, and the prevention of risks such as online abuse and addiction. European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights Nicolas Schmit spoke on the Child Guarantee which will be published next year. The Child Guarantee, to which EUD provided input, aims to ensure that every child is able to enjoy all of their social rights.

EUD will continue advocating for an inclusive Child Guarantee to ensure it does have an impact for deaf children in the EU.
