EUD

Today, (27 January) is the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, which was declared in 2005 by the United Nations (UN). However, in Germany it is also the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of National Socialism, declared nationwide in 1996 based on the anniversary of the day of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp by the Red Army in the last year of the Second World War.

Last year, the Vice President of the European Commission, Viviane Reding in charge of Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship was involved with this Remembrance Day.

Her speech was entitled “Never forget: Remembering the victims, learning from the past, continuing the legacy”

We, the EUD are remembering the victims too, as there were many deaf people who suffered during war times.

There was a recent development regarding Deaf Jews on 25 November 2013, when the very first public digital and green information plaque in memory of the Association of Deaf Jews in the Nazi era. It is presented in German Sign Language (DGS) and International Sign. IGLAD President, Mark Zaurov is to be credited for his hard work in achieving the public display. He was joined by State secretary of Berlin Senate Chancellery, A.Schmitz and proudly opened this significant step for the Deaf community and its culture.
