Breakfast briefing on disability inclusion in humanitarian action (Finnish Presidency)
4 November 2019
I’m now at the Flemish deaf seniors conference. This has been an incredibly productive considering there is a growing population of senior citizens in Europe as well as in the deaf community. The lively discussion spoke about this issue in Europe, in the deaf community and particularly, here in Flanders. There is a strong motivation from the participants to improve living standards, built environments and interpreter provision as well as many other things.
De Gelderhorst from the Netherlands is just one example of a service provider who brought examples of their services here, to demonstrate their capabilities and services.
What was fantastic to see was the Flemish Deaf community representing themselves, bringing their queries to the government through a group ministry representatives who took notes about the current situation in order to improve the standard of living, built environments and quality of life for these senior citizens.
I felt the positivity in the discussions and I hope in the future that provisions and standards will improve not only here, in Flanders, but in all countries in Europe.
Overall, it has been a great seminar!
