Public Hearing on Shaping the EU Agenda for Disability Rights 2020-2030

On the 21st of October EUD participated at the public hearing organised by the European Economic Social Committee (EESC), which focused on the new EU Agenda for Disability Rights 2020 – 2030. During the hearing participants explored what lessons can be learned from the current EU Disability Strategy 2010 – 2020 and what could be changed or improved in the next EU Disability Rights Agenda for the period of 2020 – 2030.

EUD Policy Assistant, Frankie Picron, highlighted that deaf Europeans still face many barriers while exercising the freedom of movement in the EU. He emphasised that the Disability Rights Agenda 2020 – 2030 should most definitely include this issue and ensure that all persons in the EU can enjoy their freedom of movement. He also highlighted that the Disability Rights Agenda should include better data collection on the different groups of persons with disabilities, as at the moment we lack data on deaf persons in the EU.

EUD encourages everyone to fill in the survey and evaluate whether the current EU Disability Strategy 2010 – 2020 has led to suitable policies and measures on the EU level, how it has influenced the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) in the EU and what should be addressed in the new European Disability Rights Agenda 2020 – 2030.
