Global Disability Summit Consultation Meeting

On the 14th of December 2021, the EUD attended a webinar hosted by the EDF. Its purpose was to provide information on the Global Disability Summit (GDS) 2022 and the European Regional Disability Summit programmes, the kind of commitments that governments and other stakeholders can make, and how OPDs can be involved, including via the Civil Society Forum.

Greta Gamberini, Global Disability Summit Officer at the International Disability Alliance (IDA), gave an overview of the GDS, which will be entirely virtual and is due to take place on 16–17 February 2022 at 2 to 5pm. She reminded the participants that the GDS is not a conference for creating visibility, but rather is for disability inclusion in the broader context of development. Ms Gamberini also shared details about the Global Youth Summit on 14 February 2022, co-hosted by the IDA, Atlas Alliance, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and IDA Youth Caucus. It aims to showcase the innovation of organisations led by youth with disabilities at the local, regional and global levels. The next day, 15 February 2022, the Civil Society Forum will take place. Organised by the Civil Society Reference Group and co-hosted by the IDA and Atlas Alliance, this event covers issues relevant to civil society that might not be addressed during the GDS.

The EDF’s International Coordinator Manager, Marion Steff, talked about Regional Summits related to the GDS. She said the regional summits are intended to entrench the GDS mechanism and foster focused discussions that are relevant to each region. At the EU Summit on Disability Inclusion in International Cooperation on 8 February 2022, participants will discuss collaboration across the broader European region and how to increase inclusion for PWDs. Only four countries have made commitments for the forthcoming GDS: Sweden, Andorra, Finland and the UK.
