Dia Internacional da Mulher 2022

Happy International Women’s Day!

On this special day EUD would like to share with the findings of EUD Gender Equality working group’s survey on deaf women’s situation in the National Associations of the Deaf (NADs) that are EUD member organisations. The survey was led by Louise Danielsson, EUD Board Member who leads EUD Gender Equality working group. The data was collected in February 2021.

The findings show that deaf women are well represented in different National Associations of the Deaf on several levels (on boards, among staff, and in leadership roles), however gender equality issues are only addressed by 48.3% of the National Associations of the Deaf.

In light of the findings of the survey EUD congratulates NADs for maintaining gender balance in the boards and among the staff of NADs. EUD, however recommends NADs to form committees, clubs or groups within the organisations to specifically focus on barriers and issues faced by deaf women. Moreover, EUD would like to encourage the NADs to pay more attention to addressing the topics of gender equality and non-discrimination of deaf women though their work plans/agendas to ensure deaf women’s issues are addressed. We hope this findings will be useful for the National Associations of the Deaf.

Gender equality is one of the core principles of EUD, therefore we strongly encourage NADs to empower deaf women through participation. Especially, in light of the upcoming EUD Board election that will be taking place in May 2022 EUD is hoping to see more female nominations.

Your sincerely,

Sofia Isari                            Louise ‘ Lolo’ Danielsson
EUD Vice President                           EUD Board Member
