‘Alone We Can Do So Little, Together We Can Do So Much’ by European Deafblind Union

On the 5th June, EUD participated at the conference organised by the European Deafblind Union (EDbU) entitled ‘Alone We Can Do So Little, Together We Can Do So Much’. The conference took place at the European Parliament and was hosted by Members of the European Parliament Helga Stevens and Adám Kósá.

The conference was opened by Mrs Stevens and Mr Kósa. It was highlighted that EDbU is remembering the life of Hellen Keller 50 years after her passing. Hellen Keller is a true role model for Deafblind persons since her disability has not prevented her from being an active member of the society.

Sanja Tarczay, the President of the EDbU chaired the event during which different stakeholders raised many important points. Emmanuel Grange, Head of Unit – Disability and Inclusion (DG EMPL) the European Commission highlighted that the European Union is a party to the UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities, therefore must ensure full inclusion and equal participation for Deafblind people. The EU is aiming at creating more accessible Europe for people with disabilities including deafblind people while adopting legislative measures such as the European Accessibility Act, European Disability Strategy and other initiatives such as European Pillar of Social Rights.

During the event emergency resolution on Professional Deafblind Interpreters and Equal Access to Communication for Person with Deafblindness in Europe was presented. Through the resolution the European Parliament together with the European Deafblind Union, European Deafblind Network and the representatives of persons with Deafblindnes in Europe urge all EU Member States to recognise Deafblindness as a unique, dual sensory impairment, to ensure the right to qualified and professional deafblind interpreters/intervenors, to ensure the right to accessibility and reasonable accommodation; to ensure the right to education, training, employment and independent living and to ensure the fight for full participation, self-representation and equality in Europe.

Mark Wheatley, Executive Director of EUD, expressed that EUD fully supports EDbU and the emergency resolution.
