The meeting of the European Platform of Deafness, Hard of Hearing and Deafblindness

The meeting of the European Platform of Deafness, Hard of Hearing and Deafblindness

On the 13th of March EUD attended the meeting of the European Platform of Deafness, Hard of Hearing and Deafblindness, which took place in Barcelona, Spain. During the meeting members of the Platform had an opportunity to update each other on the recent developments in their work and plan the common actions for the future.

Representatives from the European Association of Cochlear Implant Users organisation, European Deafblind Network, European Federation of Hard of Hearing, FEPEDA and European Deafblind Union attended the meeting. During the meeting, representatives discussed what should be the next steps after the formal adoption of the European Accessibility Act (EAA). It was highlighted that an ambitious and effective transposition of the EAA into the national laws is necessary to increase accessibility for the deaf, hard of hearing and deafblind persons. The organisations agreed that the advocacy on the national level and active collaboration with the European Disability Forum would continue.

Moreover, the meeting was an excellent opportunity to discuss advocacy actions that should be undertaken by the EU level organisations so the accessibility for the deaf, hard of hearing and deafblind voters is increased which would allow to meaningfully enjoy the right to vote and to stand for election during the European elections 2019. It was agreed to continue advocating for more accessibility through the provision of subtitles, sign language interpretation, captioning, speech-to-text services and other means.

The next meeting of the European Platform of Deafness, Hard of Hearing and Deafblindness will take place in October this year in Brussels.
