EUD’s first webinar of 2024 took place in Lisbon – Combatting Gender-based Violence and Discrimination against Deaf Women and Girls using the EU Pillar of Social Rights

On Saturday, 2nd March, EUD held its first webinar of 2024 on the topic of Combatting Gender-based Violence and Discrimination against Deaf Women and Girls using the EU Pillar of Social Rights. It was a hybrid format as it took place both in-person in Lisbon, hosted by our Portuguese member – Federação Portuguesa das Associações de Surdos (Portuguese Federation of the Deaf), and online via Facebook live and zoom.

We had a great variety of women speakers from within our membership – National Associations of the Deaf – namely, Marta Couto Bartolo from the Portuguese Federation of the Deaf, Lianne Quigley from the Irish Deaf Society, and Dijana Vincek from the Croatian Federation of the Deaf. Ms Couto Bartolo gave a presentation on the situation of deaf women and girls in Portugal, and Ms Quigley and Ms Vincek discussed the situation of deaf women and girls in the EU generally. These presentations provided an overview of the main challenges and barriers facing deaf women and girls in the EU to the full and equal enjoyment of their right to non-discrimination, based on their gender, disability, and any other grounds, under Article 6 of the UN CRPD.

The EUD President, Sofia Isari, outlined how the EU Pillar of Social Rights can be a tool to enhance gender equality in the EU. Moreover, Ms Isari, and EUD Vice-President, Ronit Laquerriere-Leven, gave a presentation of EUD’s upcoming report on “Combatting Gender-based Violence and Discrimination against Deaf Women and Girls in the EU” which will be published this month. To finish, there was a Q&A session which gave participants a chance to ask questions to the panellists on this crucial topic.

EUD would like to thank all those who participated in the webinar, and we look forward to welcoming you to our next in the coming months!
