Conference on "The situation of fundamental rights in the European Union in 2015"

On 16.06.2016, EUD took part in a conference on “The situation of fundamental rights in the European Union in 2015” organised by the committee of Civil Liberties, Justice and Home affairs of the European Parliament. During the first session, several current reports by on this topic were presented by representatives of the European Commission and the Council of Europe. The second session was dedicated to the rights of minorities, Roma, intersex people and people with disabilities. Pat Clark from the European Disability Forum underlined the need of a constant structured dialogue between the EU and persons with disabilities and their representative organisations which needs to go further than the ad-hoc participation of DPOs. He pointed out that this is especially crucial due to the fact that persons with disabilities were and still are more severely affected by the crisis. He furthermore voiced concerns about the fact that the European Disability strategy 2010-2020 is only being reviewed at the moment and that no new action plan is being developed, although the EU ratifying the UNCRPD in 2011 after the adoption of this strategy should have a fundamental impact on its content. He also called upon the European Parliament to be a leader in the adoption of the European Accessibility act and to support development of a European social protection floor. Finally, he criticised that parts of the European Structural and Investment funds are being used to finance projects or institutions that are not in line with the UNCRPD.
