EUD statement on Finland’s UNCRPD ratification

On 11 May 2016, Finland ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) as well as its Optional Protocol. Both will thus enter into force for Finland on 10 June 2016.

EUD highly welcomes the UNCRPD ratification by Finland, as this obliges it to promote, protect, and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, including deaf and hard of hearing persons. With now just one EU member state shy of having ratified the UNCRPD, this was an important step towards all of them ratifying the only international human rights instrument that is dedicated exclusively to the rights of persons with disabilities.

We would like use the occasion to call onto Ireland to ratify this convention, so that all EU member states, in cooperation with the European Union (EU) that ratified it in 2010, can work together for the equal treatment and full inclusion of persons with disabilities.

More information about Finland’s ratification can be found here: http://formin.finland.fi/public/default.aspx?contentid=346204
