Greece ratifies UNCRPD

EUD

On 10 April 2012, the Greek Parliament ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and its Optional Protocol.

Greece is the 113th country to ratify the Convention. Now it is imperative of the Greek Parliament, political parties, and the government to proceed with the immediate implementation of the Convention.

EUD Vice-President Yannis Yallouros from Greece is pleased about the ratification of the UNCRPD by the Greek government but he also reminds us not to forget the current difficult situation in Greece:

As you may already know the financial crisis hit southern Europe very hard, including Greece, Italy and Spain. The fight of the Deaf movement against exclusion, poverty, and discrimination is becoming more difficult but we shall not stop until we see the Greek political parties and the government implementing the UNCRPD”, Yannis Yallouros says.

With Greece as the latest EU country to ratify the UNCRPD, there are only six EU countries and Iceland left, which have yet to ratify the UNCRPD.
