Joint EDF – IDDC Conference

EUD Interns, Elsa Brunemalm and Stephanie Johnston, attended the Joint European Disability Forum (EDF) and International Disability and Development Consortiumm (IDDC) event: “Including People with Disabilities in the Millennium Development Goals and Beyond” on 10th June 2013.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDG) are a UN level plan to decrease global poverty. Its goals link to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability and develop a global partnership for development.

The event discussed how MDG can include people with disabilities. This is critical because statistics prove that disabled people are more likely to be poor: One out of ten people in the world are disabled, but one out of five people below the poverty line are disabled.
