Discussions on the future development of the European Solidarity Corps

EUD

On 12 April 2017, the EUD attended the European Solidarity Corps Stakeholder Forum which brought together national and European representatives of civil society organisations, authorities and other stakeholders to discuss the key issues related to the future development of the European Solidarity Corps.

The European Solidarity Corps is a new European Union initiative which creates opportunities for young people to volunteer or work in projects in their own country or abroad that benefit communities and people around Europe.

Representatives of the European Solidarity Corps and stakeholders discussed how to make the European Solidarity Corps attractive to young people and organisations, how it should be set up and governed and how to increase young people’s employability.

Many stakeholders shared the view that the European Solidarity Corps should be inclusive and open to young people regardless of their background. Disadvantaged young people, such as young people with disabilities, constitute a heterogeneous group who face different and often multiple barriers to entering the labour market and partaking in civic engagement and therefore deserve additional support. Therefore, the European Solidarity Corps aims at enabling participation of all young people irrespective of their background, education level, skills or disability.

The dialogue will inform the Commission’s legislative proposal which will be released in the end of May 2017. Therefore, the participation of the EUD was very much needed for the deaf community to be represented and we will continue participating in future events to ensure that this process is fully accessible to young deaf persons.
