EUD has worked extensively on the UNCRPD and the review session of the EU. The European Parliament and the European Commission both reviewed the implementation process. EUD has been present at events at the European Parliament regarding the concluding observations for the EU to put forward our views. We also contributed to the concluding observations by pointing out the importance of sign languages and their official recognition in the Member states.
Several meetings of the Disability Intergroup in Strasbourg have been organised to discuss about the UNCRPD implementation. We attended one of them and took the floor to give a speech pointing out the importance of pushing the implementation forward according to the concluding observations to the EU.
EUD welcomes the fact that MEP Helga Stevens is the Rapporteur for a report of the European Parliament on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, with special regard to the Concluding Observations of the UN CRPD Committee. Several drafts have been discussed and EUD has been following all the developments closely. The final draft will be voted on on 7 July and we are hoping that it will be adopted with a strong majority by the plenary of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
We are planning to witness the adoption of this significant report. We will be asking the rapporteur, Helga Stevens, to comment on the implementation process and to explain what a strong implementation of the UNCRPD would mean for the deaf community in the EU.
