"Kuurojen tulkkauksen kehittäminen" -konferenssi Hampurissa, Saksassa.

‘Developing Deaf Interpreting’ conference in Hamburg, Germany.

On the 25th of May, EUD President Dr Markku Jokinen and EUD Board Member Sofia Isari participated at the conference ‘Developing Deaf Interpreting’ in Hamburg, Germany. The conference was a successful event, which gathered 120 attendees from 20 different countries.

The project ‘Developing Deaf Interpreting’, funded by the Erasmus Plus project, started in September 2015 and will end in August 2018. The project is a cooperation among five partners: the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters (EFSLI), the University of Hamburg, the University of Applied Sciences (HUMAK), the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra and the Danish National Association of the Deaf (DDL). EUD Board member, Sofia Isari is the chair of the Deaf Interpreters Committee at the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters (EFSLI). The aim of the project is to develop deaf interpreting in Europe.

Dr Jokinen was invited to give a presentation during the conference. He highlighted that lobbying for the development of the profession of deaf interpreter in Europe is very important. EUD needs to be involved in developing the future of deaf interpreters, for instance while considering the quality of the service and training of the professionals for various levels of qualifications.

Therefore, during the conference differences of three professions: deaf interpreters, sign language interpreters and interpreters were discussed. These three professions need to be concretely defined in Europe. Furthermore, it was emphasised that there is no network established when it comes to hearing interpreters and deaf interpreters, which is necessary in order to have a better cooperation.

The conference provided with a great opportunity to have a dialogue between EUD and the project partners. We look forward to following the project and collaborating with its partners in the future.
