On the 30de of September EUD followed the webinar on the transposition of the European Accessibility Act (EAA). The webinar was organised by the European Disability Forum (EDF) with the participation of the European Commission (EC).
The EAA has been a key piece of legislation for strengthening the right of persons with disabilities for equal access to services and products in the EU. It sets EU-wide minimum accessibility requirements for certain services and products available in the EU internal market. While the EAA introduces ground-breaking requirements, the EAA can be strengthened during the period of transposition by EU countries. The deadline for the transposition period is 28 June 2022.
During her presentation, Inmaculada Placencia Porrero, Senior Expert at the Disability and Inclusion Unit, from the European Commission explained the working group of the European Commission, responsible for the monitoring of the implementation of the EAA, which will include representative organisations of persons with disabilities, market surveillance authorities, authorities responsible for compliance of services. This working group will exchange information and best practices, cooperate on the implementation and advise the EC. For example, this may include an exchange of practices in relation to how access to the 112-emergency telephone number is enabled for deaf and hard-of-hearing persons.
During the presentation by Alejandro Moledo, EDF Policy coordinator, EUD learned how to better support its members during their advocacy for an ambitious transposition of the EAA at the national level. He especially emphasised that NADs should advocate to expand the scope of products and services covered, shorten deadlines for transposition, and build alliances and take action as soon as possible.
The period of transposition of EU legislation is an opportunity to advocate for better accessibility legislation at the national level. EUD strongly encourages its members to follow this webinar to understand in detail the existing opportunities for advocacy at the national level. EUD will continue to actively engage with its members to ensure an ambitious transposition of the EAA.
